In the winter months we spend more time inside, become more sedentary and the flu cold cycle begins to make its rounds.
The following are 6 ways to prepare yourself and keep your family healthy over the winter months:
- Wash Your Hands ore often – studies have recently shown that using a bar of soap does not spread germs and that antibacterial soaps actually strip your hands of the healthy bacteria we need. For amazing local vegan luxury soaps in Kingston buy them at Shiva’s Delight.
- Increase Vitamin D intake – sstart adding Vitamin D to your daily regimen now. As the days get shorter we get less sunshine, which is our natural source of Vitamin D. And this is also the time of year when the flu bug begins to circulate. You need to protect yourself and strengthen your immune system. 2000-4000 IU is what you need as your daily intake over the indoor winter months. This helps boost your immune system in cold and flu season and helps with the absorption of calcium that helps keep your bones strong and healthy. If you feel a cold of flu coming on, bump up your daily intake.
- Stay Hydrated by drinking water – we need water to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In the summer we remember to carry water and sip it often with the heat. In colder weather, our body’s thirst seems to lessen, making it more likely for us to drink less water. This can create a ripple effect on our digestion, the health of the kidneys, immune system and skin. Keep that water bottle by your side all year to stay hydrated and healthy.
- Eat the Rainbow – eat brightly coloured foods that are alive not processed: lots of fresh fruit and veggies for snacks, and at every meal.
- Move Your Body – get outside for a walk, do some Yoga etc. When you do so, it helps to move and then release the built up toxins from being more sedentary at this time of year. This in turn helps your immune system.
- Stay Positive – Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is real. Bump up your oils / omega vitamins and B12 to soothe your nervous system. Move your body and get out in the sunlight when you can. Regular exposure helps to ward off seasonal depression, and even just 10-15 minutes can stimulate your system to produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D; essential for bone & teeth health, and can help to prevent cancer. It also helps you feel calmer and more alert. 80-90 % of North Americans are Vitamin D deficient! Eat more green leafy veggies too!

Wellness Tip
Begin a Meditation Practice
Even 3 minutes per day with change your life and help to settle down your nervous system (stress, anxiety), calm your heart and give you a peaceful break. I often feel like I have had a nap after a short time in silent meditation.
Come to the Heal Anxiety and Stress & Introduction to Meditation class with me in the New Year on January 18 to learn how.
